The 5 Best Tinted Brow Gels for Women Over 35 (and how to select Your shade!)

Struggle with thin, wiry gray brows? Discover the best tinted brow gels for women over 35 that soften coarse hairs, fill sparse arches, and lift your face.

If you’ve noticed that your go-to brow pencils are starting to look a little too harsh, or that your arches seem to be disappearing altogether, you are not imagining things. As we cross into our mid 30s to early 40s and beyond, our brows naturally thin out, lose their youthful lift, and return as stubborn, wiry silver strands that seem to reject standard makeup entirely. But before you resign yourself to a flat, painted-on look, there’s an easier way to frame your face. A great tinted brow gel is the ultimate beauty shortcut for mature skin—instantly coating coarse grays, building realistic three-dimensional volume on sparse patches, and physically lifting drooping arches to open up your entire face.

The Top 4 Tinted Brow Gels for Mature Brows

1. Best Luxury & Growth Treatment: Chantecaille Full Brow Perfecting Gel + Tint

If you want your makeup to work double duty, this high-end, botanical-heavy gel is worth every penny. Unlike formulas that just paint over thinning spots, Chantecaille goes deep into hair care. It is infused with a powerful growth-promoting peptide complex and panthenol to actively strengthen your hair follicles, encouraging thicker, healthier growth with daily wear.

    • The Mature Skin Benefit: Instead of heavy, synthetic polymers that can dry down into a crunchy or flaky film on fine lines, Chantecaille relies on a blend of sunflower seed wax and soft, flexible microfibers. It adds immediate, natural-looking volume while leaving the hairs soft to the touch. I have used this for years. and have loved the ease of use, the brush applicator in particular and the color. Recently, I tried the Benefit brow gel below and find myself reaching for the Benefit brow gel rather than the Chantecaille because I find the Benefit brow gel retains its color and lasts longer than the Chantecaille gel. To be honest, after using the Chantecaille product consistently for over 5 years, I really have not seen any improvement in the “thickening or strengthening of my brows as the product claims promise”. Granted, I have not been specifically purchasing this product to help grow my brows but (consistent with the reasoning for this blog post), I still found myself researching different options for brow solutions.

2. Best for Maximum Fullness: Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow+ Volumizing Eyebrow Gel

For brows that have lost their density due to over-plucking or natural aging, Benefit Gimme Brow+ is an absolute favorite. Instead of just staining the skin beneath your arches, this formula contains tiny microfibers that physically adhere to your existing hairs and skin, building believable, three-dimensional volume.

    • The Mature Skin Benefit: The wand features a micro-spoolie brush. It is small enough to coat the tiniest baby hairs with surgical precision, preventing excess wet product from smudging onto your skin texture. Loving this product recently. In fact. it has gently pushed aside my long-time favorite Chanticaille brow gel on a daily basis. The color on this gel is outstanding and it looks natural. It is also a surprising bonus in that this brow product is $28.00 which is a $14.00 savings over my former gel.

3. Best Long-Wear & Lifting Formula: Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted Brow Gel

If you deal with midday makeup fading or hot flashes, the classic Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted Brow Gel is completely indestructible. It offers a firmer, reliable hold that physically locks downward-growing hairs into a youthfully lifted, combed-up position.

    • The Mature Skin Benefit: The tint contains very subtle, light-reflecting pigments that add multi-dimensional shine, mimicking the glossiness of youthful hair so your brows never look flat or single-toned. I have pretty much always been on the fence with this product having tried it years ago. I don’t have ‘wayward’ hairs growing on my brows that go in different directions, so maybe this is not the most ideal product for me. I tried it again, and still came up a bit short on color delivery for me. I really think this product is a great tamer for unruly brows.

4. Best Budget Find: Elf Wow Brow Gel

You do not need to spend a fortune to get beautiful results. The Elf Wow Brow Gel is a phenomenal drugstore alternative that punches far above its price tag. It utilizes a fiber-infused wax-gel hybrid that builds clean volume and deposits a soft, believable tint. This is a great value for the $$$. This product costs $5-$6.00 per tube. I find it works well but does not have a lot of color enhancement on the lighter shades. It lasts all day on my brows. Unfortunately, I am experiencing an odd thing here: after using for 10 days, it feels as if the product is drying out and getting more difficult to get onto the brush as I pull it out of the tube. That is really the only negative I have seen on this product. I make absolutely certain to wipe the edges before placing the cap back on, and still I can see product dry-out after a short time frame. I am going to try another tube to see if this was a one-off dry-out situation and will update this page.

    • The Mature Skin Benefit: It provides a flexible hold that never dries down into a crunchy, stiff finish, making it incredibly comfortable for sensitive skin types.
5. Best Volumizing & Precision Pick: Kosas Air Brow Tinted Clean Volumizing Eyebrow Gel

Features tiny microfibers that physically adhere to your existing hairs and skin, building believable, three-dimensional volume. Outstanding natural color delivery at a better price, which offers a significant savings over my long-time favorite Chantecaille Full Brow Perfecting Gel.

  • The Mature Skin Benefit: The wand features a micro-spoolie brush. It is small enough to coat the tiniest baby hairs with surgical precision, preventing excess wet product from smudging onto your skin texture. It has gently pushed aside long-time favorites for daily wear. I really like this ‘clean’ brow gel that is incredibly popular online based upon reviews. That is what drew me to try this brow gel. I will say the color payoff on the lighter end of the color spectrum was very natural looking. If you are focusing moving your makeup and skincare over to what is considered ‘clean beauty’, this would be a really good option for you as opposed to the Benefit Gimme Brow gel.

How to Pick Your Perfect Shade (The “Opposites Attract” Rule)

When you are over 35, matching your brow gel exactly to your head hair can be a trap. If your brows are thinning or sparse, an exact match can either wash you out completely or look incredibly flat and artificial. The secret to a youthful, face-lifting frame is creating a soft, dimensional contrast.

    • The Sweet Spot: For Level 7 Hair (Medium Blonde & Light Brunette)
If you color your hair using a 7NN or identify as a rich medium blonde or soft light brown, your brow hair needs a subtle boost to look full. Select a neutral taupe or a soft light brown. This is just deep enough to cast a realistic shadow behind your sparse hairs, making your brows look naturally dense and full without overpowering your face.
        • What to buy: Look for Chantecaille Full Brow Gel in the shade Light, which behaves like an undetectable, soft taupe. Alternatively, grab Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow+ in Shade 3 (Neutral Light Brown).

    • For Dark Brown or Black Hair → Go 1–2 Shades Lighter
Heavy, pitch-black or espresso brow gels cast dark shadows downward, which can accidentally make your eyes look tired or severe. Select a soft medium brown, cool brunette, or dark taupe to blanket any hidden gray roots while softening your overall facial features.
    • For Platinum or Light Blonde Hair → Go 1–2 Shades Darker
Ultra-light blonde brow gels offer zero structural support, which can make the upper half of your face look slightly washed out or faded. Select a dark blonde, soft ash brown, or deep taupe to provide the necessary definition to physically lift and frame your eyes.
    • For Salt-and-Pepper or Pure Gray Hair → Select Cool Taupe or Slate
Avoid any warm, golden-brown, or auburn colors at all costs—they will look glaringly orange against silver hair. Choose a cool-toned taupe, slate, or soft gray to mimic natural hair shadows while blending seamlessly into white strands.

3 Rules for Flawless Application on Mature Brows

  • The Back-Comb Maneuver: Gray hair is highly resistant to pigment. To ensure 100% coverage, brush your brow gel backwards (from the tail end toward your nose) first. This coats the hidden underside of the silver hairs. Then, brush them forward and upward into their final shape.
  • Scrape the Wand First: Tinted gels can easily overload sparse areas if the brush is too wet. Always scrape the tip of the spoolie brush against the inner rim of the tube before touching it to your face. You can always add more, but it is hard to remove excess color once it dries.
  • Choose One Shade Lighter: Unless your hair is naturally jet-black, always purchase a brow tint that is slightly lighter than your target depth to keep the face bright. Harsh, overly dark brows can look severe on mature skin, whereas a slightly lighter shade instantly softens your features and brightens the eye area.

This coats the hidden underside of the silver hairs. Then, brush them forward and upward into their final shape.
