About 16 years ago, I was sitting around thinking about our kids leaving the nest for college. I wanted to figure out what my husband and I could do to make this massive transition a bit easier for them. You open the bathroom cabinet, and boom—toothpaste. You walk downstairs, and look at that—laundry detergent.
Then comes the harsh reality of a freshman budget. There is nothing quite like the unique frustration of driving to a local pharmacy at 1:00 AM because you are coughing, feeling like absolute crap, and realizing a bottle of cold medicine is going to wipe out your entire entertainment fund for the month.
On a total whim, I drove to Target to put together a college survival kit. I walked the aisles and asked myself: If I were setting up an apartment for the very first time with the knowledge I have now as a mature adult, what would I buy? I started tossing items into my cart as if I were starting my own life over.
