The Empties Review: Splurge vs. Skip (9/30/26)

The Empties Edit: Honest Reflections on My Latest Beauty and Skincare Empties

Welcome back to my latest empties roundup! Today, we are diving into a mix of high-end luxury skincare, viral K-beauty finds, and everyday drugstore body care.

There is something deeply satisfying about completely finishing a product. It gives you the true space to evaluate whether an item actually delivers on its promises, especially when navigating the needs of mature, changing skin. My bathroom counter has been a brutal testing ground lately, holding everything from high-end luxury investments to viral K-beauty formulas.

From a skin tint that makes me look instantly healthy to a few highly underwhelmed misses that failed to move the needle on my sunspots and texture, here is the honest breakdown of what cleared my checkout line—and what is going back to the store. I’ve scraped, squeezed, and used up every last drop of these 8 products to give you my honest thoughts. Some are absolute holy grails that I will spend my last dime on, while others were a total “meh.” Let’s get into the hits and misses!

The Makeup Bag Staples Worth the Splurge

Sisley Beauty Phyto-Hydra Teint (N°1.5 Beige – #2 Medium) Finding the perfect lightweight, natural base after 40 can feel like a balancing act. You want something that blurs imperfections and hydrates dry spots without clinging to fine lines. I am absolutely in love with this skin tint and keep reaching for it in my makeup bag. It goes on fairly thin, providing just enough coverage to behave like a true skin tint while leaving a healthy, natural finish that never looks dry. It has no lasting smell and wears beautifully all day long. While it carries a luxury price tag, the skincare benefits infused inside make it worth every penny. Verdict: Definitely will repurchase.

Sisley Double Tenseur Instant & Long-Term This is one of those “if you know, you know” cult-favorite products that quietly delivers professional-level results. It is undeniably expensive, but I have been using it religiously for about five years now because it works as an amazing, firming prep base for makeup. While I will continue to search for a more affordably priced alternative, I am happily using it until I find a true dupe that replaces it. Verdict: Will repurchase for now.

The Everyday Body Care Routine

Dove Serum+ Hydration Body Wash with Hyaluronic Acid (30 fl oz)   As we move through different seasons, adding extra hydration to skin that craves moisture is a win-win. This is a wonderful, moisturizing shower gel that offers great value for your money. However, instead of reordering it immediately, I decided to test a new version to see how it compares: the Dove Serum+ Radiance Body Wash (3% Serum with Vitamin C, 18.5 oz).   So far, so good! Verdict: Not repurchasing yet while I test the sister version.

The Underwhelming K-Beauty and Skincare Misses

When a product promises to smooth texture, lift arches, or fade discoloration and fails to deliver, it quickly gets cut from my routine. These next few items left me completely underwhelmed.

  • Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Night Knight Retinol Serum:  I bought this hoping for a boost in skin smoothness and firmness, but the results were totally underwhelming. I did not notice any real changes in firmness or overall skin texture. Just “meh.” To be completely fair, I should not be surprised as this is still a great really for a gently, beginner-friendly anti-aging serum as opposed to someone like myself. Verdict: Will not repurchase.
  • Celimax Pore+Dark Spot Brightening Cream:   I have three small sunspots on my face and used this cream nightly and religiously. Unfortunately, my sunspots are still the exact same color as when I started. Verdict: Will not repurchase.
  • ROMAND Juicy Lasting Tint:  This K-beauty favorite claims to last for 12 hours. In reality, I was lucky to get a mere two hours out of the tint before it vanished completely. Verdict: Will not repurchase.
  • Tata Harper Nourishing Oil Cleanser (2-in-1 Cleanser & Makeup Remover):  It was just okay. I used this in the shower every evening, but I still felt the distinct need to follow up at the sink with a second cleanse. While I will probably skip repurchasing this one, I still absolutely love and recommend the Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser! Verdict: Will not repurchase.

The Hair Care Disappointment

Drybar Big Brew Thickening & Lifting Shampoo   I am always on the hunt for products that lift and add volume without sacrificing health. I have a lot of hair but it is fine. No thickening. No lifting. Unfortunately, this shampoo was highly underwhelming. Honestly, classic Prell shampoo actually delivers better lift and thickening—even though Prell is known for being quite stripping! This one just didn’t earn a permanent spot in my bathroom. Verdict: Will not repurchase.
